How We Plan the Perfect Playlist for Your Event

People often ask how much of the night is planned and how much happens on the spot. The honest answer is both. A great event soundtrack starts with a plan built around you, then comes alive because the DJ and musicians respond to the room as it happens.

Step 1: We get to know your taste

Once your date is booked, we arrange a music planning meeting about six weeks before your event. It’s a relaxed chat, not a form to fill in. We’ll ask about:

  • The artists and genres you love, and the ones you can’t stand.
  • Songs with a story behind them: the track from your first holiday, the one your friends always end up singing.
  • Your guests: their ages, where they’re from, who the dancers are.
  • Any must-plays and, just as importantly, any do-not-plays.

The do-not-play list is one of the most useful things you can give us. It means we never accidentally play the song that reminds you of an ex.

Step 2: We map the music to your timings

Every event has a shape, and the music should follow it. For a wedding, that might look like this:

  • Drinks reception: soulful, upbeat background music, often with live sax drifting through the room.
  • Dinner: warm and conversational, loud enough to create atmosphere and quiet enough to talk over.
  • First dance and dance floor opening: the big moment, and a strong start that gets people up straight away.
  • The peak: the floor-fillers, with sax and percussion playing live.
  • The finale: the singalongs and the last song you want ringing in everyone’s ears.

Corporate events and parties have their own rhythm, with speeches, awards or a surprise reveal. We plan around those too, so the music always supports the moment rather than competing with it.

Step 3: We read the room on the night

This is where a plan becomes a party. Our DJs watch the dance floor constantly. If a song isn’t landing, they’ll move on within seconds. If a particular era or genre is going down a storm, they’ll stay with it for longer. Requests from guests are welcome too, as long as they fit the mood and your do-not-play list.

It’s why we don’t believe in rigid, song-by-song playlists for the dance floor. Your must-plays will all be there. The order and the moments are chosen live, for the people in front of us.

Step 4: The live musicians lift the key moments

Our saxophonist and percussionist play three 40-minute live sets over the DJ’s mix. We time those sets to the moments with the most energy, so a great song becomes a huge moment. You can read more about what live percussion adds or browse the songs that always fill a dance floor.

A few tips for your own list

  • Keep must-plays to a handful. Ten to fifteen songs is plenty. It leaves room for the DJ to build the night around them.
  • Think about your guests, not just yourselves. A couple of tracks for the older generation early on gets everyone involved.
  • Tell us the vibe, not just the songs. “Feel-good, sunny, a bit of 90s” is often more useful than a long list.
