• They read the room. A great DJ watches the guests, not just the set list, and changes direction the moment the energy dips.
• Seamless mixing. No gaps or awkward silences between songs, so nobody has a reason to leave the floor.
• Range. Motown for your parents, 90s anthems for your friends, current hits for your younger cousins, all in one night.
• Calm professionalism. They’re organised, polite with your venue and suppliers, and ready for anything.
• Great reviews from real couples. Look for consistent praise about full dance floors and easy planning.

Questions to ask before you book

• Have you played at our venue, or at venues like it?
• How do you handle song requests and our do-not-play list?
• What sound and lighting equipment is included?
• Do you have backup equipment, and what happens if you’re ill?
• Are you experienced with sound limiters?
• Can you add live musicians?
• Do you have public liability insurance?
• How long will you play for, and can we extend on the night?

Planning your wedding music

You don’t need to write a full playlist. The best results come from giving your DJ a clear picture and trusting them with the rest:

• Your first dance and any special songs: the entrance, the cake cutting, the last song.
• A handful of must-plays, around ten to fifteen.
• A do-not-play list. Just as important as the must-plays.
• The overall vibe you want: feel-good, soulful, a big 90s throwback, a club night.
